Cheryomushki became a common word for Soviet-era housing projects as it pioneered and signified a social advance in housing based on prefabrication construction and “mikrorayon” urban planning.

In the last two decades similarly to other Moscow neighbourhoods the Cheryomushki district has underwent considerable redevelopment with additional high rise residential and commercial buildings being inserted into the existing neighbourhood urban fabric.

These additional urban and architectural developments did change the previous character of the district from Cheryomushki from a “sleeping district” and a hub of the USSR’s scientific complex into a vibrant, modern commercial and residential neighbourhood of Moscow.

In addition to becoming a modern commuter district of Moscow the neighbourhood has also changed demographically with a rising population of young people and families with children and also of active older and retired people. Equally noticeable in this context is rethink on many levels from the city administration to neighbourhood communities on the value of existing often neglected public realm spaces.

In the 21st century Moscow the new high density residential and commercial developments would greatly benefit in terms of liveability and quality of environment from a transformation of key public realm spaces. The Cheryomushki Park project has considerable potential to set a new standard of quality in landscape, environmental and people centred design of public realm.

The project will lead a  changing of mind in term of use of the city open space. The aim of the project is built a public space, where it will be possible to live the experience of daily life and also to build up a own memory connected to the identity of the citizen.
It is a project that follows the idea to transform the existing public space from a space of “infrasctructure” (street, building, etc.) to a “socialscape”, a place of meanings for the citizens in a well controlled environment and the beauty of the plantings and trees.
