The project considers two aspects that we consider fundamental for the planning of urban space: the relation between architecture and material and the relation between architecture and city.
The proposal starts from the reading of the city transformations of the urbanization of the island, the stratification of the sedimentation and the modalities of occupancy of the territory. The tie between insediative modalities and the climate and research of the resources for the construction are strongly tied to the history and the culture of Pantelleria island; its geographic position, the vulcanic nature and the isolation make this one a strongly characterized place.
The pursued idea is the maintenance and the reconstruction of the relationship with the “stone city”, which means with an urban structure which is composed by masses and “stone architecture” where the single parts of the city are not delivered up as single elements but as a part of a design that tries to tie up the “city lesions” coming up from a development produced by emergencies. The city plan maintains the evocative shape of the historical city with the characterization of lower blocks towards the sea and higher ones towards the hill, blocks that are bored by the courses, by the visuals, by the relationships established between the existing place and the new project. The new plan creates such inner relationships and delegates to the park, that crosses the constructed part, the function to connect the forehead of the sea with the inland and the historical city, thus creating an “in-between space” between the sea and the land.
